How the project is organised
FAroGels is organised into seven interconnected Work Packages that bring together project governance, doctoral training, scientific research, technological development and pathways to impact.
WP1, WP2 and WP7 support the network throughout its four-year duration. The central research pathway moves from aerogel production and characterisation in WP3, through food and packaging applications in WP4 and WP5, to advanced integration and novel applications in WP6.
Work Packages at a glance

WP1 – Management and Coordination
Coordinates governance, administration, quality assurance and risk management across all beneficiaries and associated partners.

WP2 – Doctoral Training Programme
Provides shared scientific and transferable-skills training, secondments, supervision support and career development for all doctoral candidates.

WP7 – Dissemination, Exploitation, Communication & Public Engagement
Connects project results with scientific, industrial, policy and public audiences while supporting open science, knowledge transfer and future uptake.
Research and innovation pathway
The scientific programme follows a connected pathway from aerogel materials and production processes to food and packaging applications, advanced integration and predictive modelling.
WP3 Production & characterisation
WP4 Food applications
WP5 Packaging
WP6 Advanced integration

WP3 – Aerogel Production, Optimization, and Characterization
Develops reproducible food-grade aerogels, shared production protocols and advanced tools for connecting processing conditions with material structure.

WP4 – Functional Aerogel Applications in Food Systems
Examines aerogels in representative foods for selective adsorption, ingredient protection and delivery, and sensory functionality.

WP5 – Sustainable Packaging and Industrial Applications
Transforms aerogel concepts into food-contact packaging, cushioning, insulation and active absorbent formats tested under realistic conditions.

WP6 – Advanced Integration and Novel Applications of Aerogels
Combines aerogels with advanced material formats and predictive modelling to extend functionality and support new applications.
