FAroGels – Food-Grade Aerogels for Sustainable Food Systems – has received approximately €4.19 million in funding through the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks programme.
Coordinated by Middle East Technical University, the four-year project will run from January 2027 to December 2030. It brings together 23 organisations from 8 countries, including academic institutions, research organisations, industrial partners and specialised technology companies.
FAroGels will train 15 doctoral candidates through an interdisciplinary programme spanning food engineering, materials science, aerogel technology, biotechnology and physics. Research will focus on developing biodegradable and edible aerogels for sustainable food production, processing and packaging.
The project will combine scientific research with industrial secondments, advanced training and transferable skills development. Its expected outcomes include validated food-grade aerogel libraries, harmonised production protocols and prototypes addressing real-world food-system challenges.
